The minister of state for energy Lord Hunt of Kings Heath has claimed that harnessing marine energy could provide various economic benefits for the UK.
A document was published today (March 15th) by the Lord which claimed that up to 16,000 new jobs could be provided through marine energy.
The report added that up to a quarter of these jobs could be in exports, suggesting that the UK could gain substantially from renewable energy.
Lord Hunt said: "Harnessing the power of our seas will help us reduce our carbon emissions, provide clean, green, secure and reliable energy, create jobs and provide export opportunities.
"This Action Plan sets out our vision for what marine energy can do for the UK and what we need to do to make it happen. I look forward to working with industry and other partners to get the most out of our waters and build a new, world-leading energy generation sector in the UK."
The news comes as the European Commission (EC) has highlighted achievements across the European Union (EU) in the field of renewable energy.
According to the EC, the EU is on track to beat its targets of reducing emissions by 20 per cent by 2020.
